More Colorado

This 6x8 oil painting is called "Heading Home" because it is from a photo I took last September as I headed back to Summit County from Westcliffe, Colorado. The road follows the Arkansas river a good part of the way, and in places, has cut canyons that you drive through. It was about 5pm as I came out of a canyon into the sunshine and I had to stop and take photos because the light was so nice. I do this drive every year, and I always look forward to it because the leaves are peaking at the end of September.

  1. Beautiful grays. The light on the mountain and yellow field is beautifully rendered. Very nice!

  2. I always have trouble thinking of grays as gray. I still think of it as green or orange etc. Just not as bright. I have been trying to think more of warm and cool instead of the actual color. Getting there...thanks Linda!

  4. I was thinking of your foregrounds as I did it. You do such a good job on them and I struggle with large areas that have little going on...

  10. It was a good roadtrip! I will do it again this September as I drive to Westcliffe, then to Rico for a workshop with Jill Carver, and then back home.

  11. for someone who doesn't paint plein air...your paintings have the spontaneous look of someone who does! This is a beautiful painting.

  12. Celeste, I work really hard at being spontaneous! My goal is always to be loose, but I tend to noodle more than I should....sometimes I just have to tell myself to STOP!
