Another river painting (or two)

This is just a little study I did in preparation for a bigger version of it. It is only 6x8 but it really helped me figure out what needed to be important for the 16x20 version (which sold this month. Yaaay!!) I find that doing a smaller one first helps me with composition, drawing, color and anything else I need to work out. The second time through I gave the river more of a curve and emphasized the fall colors. I may have already posted it here, but here it is again. Although the second one is probably the better of the two, I prefer the looseness and spontenatity of the first one.

  1. I like them both. The contrasting shapes are stronger in the first. The water is handled so well.

  2. Boy, you are quick Anthony! I just this minute posted it. It is funny to look at them side-by-side, which I really haven't done since I finished them. The same, but different.

  3. I also like the looseness in the first one!

  4. Hmmm.... doing a get-acquainted version is probably something I need to do too. I do like the shape of the river in the second one, but like the trees in the first one.

  5. A "get acquainted" version is a good way to put it! Perhaps I will do another larger one and keep it looser. ( just wrote "try" to keep it looser, and deleted that word "try!"...I WILL keep it looser!) Get out my number #10 brush perhaps!

  6. Wonderful, Joanne. I'm also painting a 12 x 12 copy of at 4 x 6 still life I painted this summer. I'm preparing the larger one for my first exhibit at a local art show next August 2011. The little one is mine...............
